Jersey Jack Pinball is happy to announce Jean-Paul (JP) de Win as the Graphic Designer/LCD artist for the Wizard of Oz Pinball Machine. While studying at The Design Academy in the Netherlands, JP discovered he enjoyed computer graphics and 3D animation and was soon offered an internship in the graphics department Williams right after the release of Pin2000. However, after only two weeks after his start, Williams decided to close down its pinball department. JP then continued his half year internship at Midway Games designing touchscreen games under the supervision of Greg Freres.

Back in Holland, JP finished school and worked for several Dutch broadcast companies in Amsterdam where he specialized in motion graphics for on-air promos and program packages. In 2010, JP started his own company working as a freelancer called JP Design.

JP says, "I really appreciate Jack's courage to hire somebody on the other side of the ocean. Skype and internet enable me to work closely with Greg and the team and now I can finally work in pinball and fulfill my ambition of working in the industry. It's a great honor to be the first LCD artist for a pinball machine, thanks to Jack!"

Jack says "We are thrilled with what JP has produced for us so far. He is an extremely talented individual who is going to help us take pinball to the next level. "

The idea for Mr. Potato Head took root in 1949. George Lerner developed sharp pronged plastic face & body parts meant to be stuck into vegetables & fruits to create wacky visages. George shopped his idea around to various toy companies, but was met with repeated refusals. World War II had ended only four years before and Americans had not forgotten the many sacrifices they made to support the war effort, one of which included food rationing. The "waste not, want not" mindset was still firmly intact. It's possible many young adults still harbored not so distant childhood memories of the Great Depression which lasted from 1929 to the early 40s. Undaunted, George still had faith in his unpretentious little toy and so he pressed on.

In 1951, he managed to sell his idea to a food company for use as cereal premiums. Later that same year, George showed his plastic appendages to Hassenfeld Brothers, Inc. (Hasbro) who happened to produce a line of children's play kits such as doctors & nurses kits, mailman kits, and cosmetic kits. George presented the option of producing toys that were just plain fun rather than instructive. The son of one of Hassenfeld Brothers founders was taken with the simplicity and silliness of George's invention. Hassenfeld Brothers purchased the plastic pieces from the cereal company.

Potatoes were a staple of every household and they held up better than other vegetables when pierced with the sharp prongs and so the plastic components were christened Mr. Potato Head. The first kits contained almost 30 accessories; body, hands, feet, ears, mouths, eyes, noses, hats, eyeglasses, a pipe, felt pieces to shape into hairstyles, and a Styrofoam head to practice on. Right after it's initial release, order forms for even more parts were added to the kits.

Television was still in its infancy, but was rapidly becoming the preferred media to reach the masses. Hasbro used this new marketing tool to their advantage to premiere not only the first toy commercial, but the first commercial aimed solely at children. This savvy move brought Hasbro over a million sales in the first year. Some sources estimate as high as 4 million!!

Mr. Potato Head set Hasbro well on it's way to becoming one of the most loved and largest toy manufacturers in the world. Buoyed by the early success and the general optimism and post-war affluence, Hasbro introduced Mrs. Potato Head and more extravagant accessories in 1953.

The desecration of innocent potatoes ground to a halt in 1964. The government deemed the sharp prongs hazardous so Hasbro was forced to adapt to the new standards. The new and improved dull prongs made potato stabbing difficult. Hasbro created a non-perishable plastic head with ready made holes. Children accepted the change without complaint and Hasbro's sales were unaffected.

Ten years later, the government reared it's ugly head and Hasbro conformed yet again. It seems with nothing to drive into their flesh children took to sticking the small parts in their mouths and choking. And so Mr. Potato Head's noggin doubled in size to accommodate larger accessories which meant fewer parts. His arms mysteriously vanished and his complexion was darkened.

Mr. Potato Head underwent more changes to his appearance during the 1980s. His skin adopted a pleasant golden brown hue and his shape was more oval. Best of all, his arms were reinstated. He also came equipped with the revolutionary "tater tush" storage compartment to hold his accessories.

The charm of Mr. Potato Head has never worn off, but he soared to new heights after he was featured in Pixar's mega hit Toy Story. Baby boomers experience a resurgence of reminiscence for their favorite toy and a new generation embraced a vegetable without coaxing or bribes. Potato mania ensued creating a large demand for Mr. Potato Head memorabilia.

Manufacturers heeded the call with clothing, books, jewelry, bobbleheads, games, and fast food giveaways. Neiman Marcus offered Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head figures made of Swarovski crystals priced at $8000 each.

Mr. Potato Head was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2000. Probably the truest testament to his iconic status is his inclusion in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as a balloon. He weighed 529 pounds and towered 43 feet over 50 handlers.

Though Mr. Potato Head is a bona fide pop culture favorite in his own right, he pays homage to other beloved films, characters, and personalities such as Star Wars, KISS, Elvis Presley, Looney Tunes, The Three Stooges, Star Trek, even his Toy Story co-stars have been potatofied! The newest characters to undergo the Potato Head treatment are from The Wizard of Oz.

Dorothy with Tater, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion make up the first collector's set from PPW Toys. They are scheduled to ship at the end of October and will be available in specialty outlets such as gift, toy, and collectible stores. This gift set will be followed up early next year by a Wicked Witch of the West/Winged Monkey set.

Hasbro, Pez, and Lionel have been the stuff children's dream of for generations and are cornerstones of American culture. As fans and collectors we are very fortunate The Wizard of Oz was honored by these esteemed institutions.

What's next for Mr. Potato Head? What's next for The Wizard of Oz? Mr. Potato Head recently debuted a slimmer body style and next year he'll celebrate his 60th anniversary. Excitement is already mounting for the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz in 2014. Undoubtedly, very bright futures lie ahead for both properties.

Today, we are releasing the remaining completed artwork by artist, Jerry VanderStelt. The Backglass image will be portrayed on a 26" Wells Gardner LCD monitor which will display scores, animation, movie clips, attract mode, backglass artwork and more.

The left and right sides of the back box act as a bridge to the cabinet artwork and help the story come full circle. Jerry put forth a tremendous amount of thought and effort when creating the artwork t so that every aspect of the Wizard of Oz would be captured. Jerry is an extremely talented artist and an asset to the JJP Team.

Oh, by the way.......the Wizard of Oz is a Wide Body Game! It is the same dimensionally as a Twilight Zone.

The only way to pack all of the features and elements that the Design Team wanted to incorporate in this game was to make it a wide body game. As we all know, the size of the back box is the same for a standard or wide body Williams game so it takes up the same footprint in either model.

The best thing is that we get more room to create and you get more room to play pinball! Of the top most popular pinball machines of all-time, three are wide body games. The last wide body to be built was in 1995 with Road Show.

Jack was asked now and then these past months if the game would be a wide body and he said "I just started a pinball company. If you think I would do a wide body as our first game, you must also think I'm crazy!" Now we know.

For all of our loyal customers who have joined us on the Yellow Brick Road, we appreciate your trust and confidence in us. It is because of you that we are able to create this game and propel pinball into the next age, growing a bigger player base that will love and treasure pinball as much as we do for generations to come.

Matt gets to show off his latest approved version of his Trumper Bumper Trees and the State Fair Balloon which is at the lower left of the playfield.

The 1,000 Emerald City Limited Edition WOZ games have all been allocated amongst our distributors. Soon, we will have details on the Wizard of Oz Pinball and how it is different from the Emerald City Edition. Those will be available for purchase starting on 10/10 for $6500.00 with just a $250.00 deposit and the first 1,000 games will be numbered. Available numbers start at #26.

October 10th

This week we reveal for the first time the complete full color cabinet artwork for our Wizard of Oz Pinball machine.

Next week we will release the full color backbox images along with the revised color image that will be displayed on the LCD - our "backglass" artwork.

Artist Jerry VanderStelt was commissioned to do seven different works that comprise the game, backbox, cabinet, backglass . The backglass art will be displayed on our 26" LCD.

The artwork that Jerry created tells the story of the beloved movie as it starts on the left side of the cabinet body front and works its way around the cabinet and backbox from back to the front right side of the cabinet.

"Well, Oz has always captivated me by the magical qualities in which the film was created from the musical themes, the acting and the beautifully whimsical backdrops. Oz has a dream-like mood to the film and my job was to try and convey that same mood in the cabinet art package."

Jerry continues: "Much of the design arrangement was based upon childhood memories of how The Wizard of Oz film affected me then. Hopefully these designs will fertilize the imaginations and recollections of both the young and old among us."

Our Design Team is on the tenth revision of the playfield and have ordered up the second version whitewood which they will be building soon. Next week we have some announcements about people joining the company and an update on game production.

We are also planning for our time at Pinball Expo and we thank Rob and Mike for all of their hospitality and promotion of JJP in advance.

Closer look at Alexander's 2011 Witches

Madame Alexander outdoes themselves year after year and they never cease to amaze me. Their 2011 line has produced some of their best Oz dolls yet. The Wicked Witch and Glinda are exquisite and no photos can do them justice. They are SO much more beautiful in person. If their outfits could be replicated for adults, they'd be amazing Halloween costumes!!
Magic Bubble Glinda's bodice and sleeves are pink satin embellished with a lavender sequined and beaded butterfly and embroidered lavender butterflies. Glinda's organza skirt is decorated with faux pearls, pink stones, and embroidered bubbles. The two layered tulle underskirt is covered with silver glittered dots. She's wearing shimmering pantyhose with pink and gold shoes. She comes with an embroidered organza gown embellished with faux diamonds and of course she has a metallic wand. Glinda has the Cisette face and stands at 10".

More photos can be seen here. The only minor complaints I really have about Glinda is the plastic used for her crown. I think the plastic detracts from the appearance. And she can't hold her wand. Hopefully, Madame Alexander can work out some finger joints so dolls can grip their accessories. That said, they do come with ribbon to tie on wands and brooms, in the case of the Wicked Witch of the West.
The Haunted Forest Wicked Witch of the West is one of my favorite witches. I love the colors used on this doll, feminine yet still wicked! She's more detailed than a lot of cameras can pick up. Her dress is black satin with a velveteen bodice tied with fuchsia ribbon. Her skirt is embroidered with fuchsia trees and flying crows. (I have to assume they are crows for what other birds would be flying around a haunted forest and that would be a neat albeit probably unintentional tie in to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz). She has a two layered short tulle black petticoat and black striped stockings. Her hat is embroidered with a fuchsia winged monkey and a sheer fuchsia ribbon hangs down the back. The underside of the brim is striped with shiny green and gold. Black lace up boots complete her look. She comes with a broom accented by a fuchsia ribbon. Again, my only minor complaint is that she can't grip her broom. The Wicked Witch also has the Cisette face and stands at 10". More Witch photos can be seen here.

Chesterton Must Be Over the Rainbow!

Visitors will feel they've been whisked away by tornado and dropped into a magical land this weekend when the streets of Chesterton come alive with the sights and sounds of Oz. This year the Chesterton Wizard of Oz Festival is commemorating 30 years of fandom and frivolity. It's hard to imagine what started as a 3 hour affair has grown into a weekend celebration that welcomes 40,000+.

The fest offers many activities sure to appeal to all manner of Oz enthusiasts. Parties, silent auction, parade, there's even a showing of The Wizard of Oz at the 49er Drive In Theatre. Food, craft, and Oz vendors line the main streets. Representatives promoting the new animated feature Dorothy of Oz will be taking up half a street! Dorothy of Oz is based on the book by Roger Baum great grandson of Wonderful Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. Roger will be in attendance this year. Jersey Jack, the makers of the limited edition Wizard of Oz pinball game will also be on hand.

In addition to Roger Baum, many other Oz dignitaries will be in attendance. The beloved Munchkins and Munchkins -By-Marriage Karl Slover, Margaret Pellegrini, Myrna Swensen, and Mary Ellen St. Aubin are back to reminisce with fans. Michael Siewert will be displaying select pieces from his amazing Judy Garland: Dressing of a Legend costume collection. Artists Rick Ewigleben and Joe Shipbaugh will debut their beautiful coloring book inspired by Michael's collection. Wizard of Oz/Judy Garland historian extraordinaire John Fricke will have his glorious new book Judy: A Legendary Film Career. Caren Marsh-Doll, Judy Garland's stand in during filming of The Wizard of Oz will have her fascinating autobiographies about her personal life and her experiences during Hollywood's hey day. Robert Baum great grandson of L. Frank Baum will be participating in various festival events. Robert was instrumental during the filming of The Dreamer of Oz and much of his personal collection can be seen in the movie. Jean Nelson, the founder of the Yellow Brick Road Shop and festival will be out and about so be sure to congratulate her on one of the longest running Oz events in the country!!

One of the most anticipated festival events is, without a doubt, the Collector's Exchange and Auction. This year the auction will take place at Chesterton Middle School and they'll have a fabulous array of vintage and new memorabilia. There's donations from our favorite manufacturers including newcomers Funko, Schylling, and Cafe Press. Fantasy artist Jasmine Becket-Griffith sent a beautiful framed canvas. Trendsetters donated at limited edition trio film cell piece with a backlight. Longtime collectors Chuck Chicanowicz and Michael D. Manzini have graciously donated from their troves of Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland collectibles. A good number of the auction items are one of a kinds and hand made. Shawn Ryan's donation is a replica Munchkin Coroner costume that was worn by Meinhardt Raabe. Barb Huddleson made shadow boxes with autographed Munchkin photos. A very special 30th anniversary quilt made by Deb Dwyer will be on display throughout the festival and at the Auction/Exchange. Raffle tickets will be sold for a drawing held during closing ceremonies. Barb and Deb and many of the festival volunteers are from The Everything Oz Club, a delightful haven for fans of anything and everything Oz. Year after year they donate their talents and time to make the festival a pleasant experience for everyone. If you can't check them out during the fest, then please look them up online after. Vendors from all over the country will be at the auction peddling their Oz wares including first time festival attendee Fred Trust of RareOzBooks.com. Fred specializes in hard to find and vintage Oz books.

Amidst all the fun and games, please take a moment if you can, to remember those less fortunate. This year the festival has teamed up with Toys For Tots. Toys For Tots does an incredible job bringing joy to underprivileged children. This is a wonderful opportunity to spread the magic of Oz, but any new toy will be accepted.

Jersey Jack Design & Development Progress

This week we report on some of what's going on at the JJP Midwest Campus as the game design and development continues at a fever pitch.

The whitewood (per PinWiki: a whitewood is an unpainted playfield that is used during the development phase of a project to test a games layout) game is shooting and the Design Team are working on many elements and aspects of the game as it is no longer just a one dimensional drawing or a 3-D model.

The continued input from every member of the Team as well as the level of new things that are created is amazing. Jack said "my head is spinning like Dorothy's house".

Chris Granner continues to make music, Greg and Keith are working to place inserts in the playing field with a careful touch to incorporate rules as Greg gets ready to take pencil to paper to layout the artwork for the playfield.

Jerry Vanderstelt is working to complete his seven works of art on canvas, now all in color and lots of mechanical drawings are going to Vendors to create all kinds of parts for game production.

Many people have asked what makes these 1,000 Emerald City games unique and collectible, here are

some of the things that make them special and prized:

*Limited to 1,000 games with each game having a special numbered plaque affixed to the game on the front of the cabinet - # of 1,000 etc...

*Hand signed Certificate of Authenticity by Design Team with each game. This will be produced in a special collectible way

*Body armor that has been treated in a special finish Matt has chosen with Jerry. The four legs, side rails, hinges, lockdown bar, etc.

*The back glass is in a special mirror effect finish

*A custom topper will be unique to the Emerald City Limited Edition Game

*Included shaker motor which will be unique to the Emerald City Limited Edition Game

A number of other things are under consideration such as inclusion of non-glare playfield glass, goodie bag, spare parts package, leg protectors, etc. are in the mix and we will disclose them in coming weeks.

R. John Wright Reveals Wicked Witch and Dorothy Production Photos

Really incredible, awe inspiring detail for the felt medium!

She stands 17" tall and is fully jointed at the shoulders, hip, and neck with the R. John Wright ball & socket jointing system. Her felt hands are individually sewn fingers with applied fingers. She has a mohair wig styled exactly as it was in the film. Each face has meticulously hand painted features.

As you can see, R. John Wright takes great pains to ensure the authenticity of each character. Only 250 dolls will be made. She is priced at $1575.00. Please see this link for more information.

Hallmark Giftware Arriving in Stores & Ornaments Next Week

Saw some of the new giftware items yesterday!! The release date was originally July 25th but now hopefully the line will be out in time for the Ornament Premiere next weekend.    The new giftware is really nice and has a very classy look to it.  You can see some examples in my earlier blog entry here. Keep an eye on Party City.com and maybe Party City stores for coordinating partyware.

There's a tile with the ruby slippers on it that says "Keep the Courage, I want the shoes". Bigger than I expected.   6" by 6" maybe. Priced at $9.95.    Good Witch/Bad Witch double mug for $14.95.   Wicked Witch mug for $9.93 and Glinda/Wicked Witch sentiment plaque that reads "Good Friends are Great, Best Friends are Wicked"   $16.95.   I think that is going to be a hot item for the Wicked crowd too.

Today is the last day for pre-sales!!

Today as June ends, Jersey Jack Pinball, Inc. has released the right "Good Side" of the playfield for the Wizard of Oz Pinball Machine.

Some of the detail is listed below but this side has two magnets, two flippers, the upper Munchkinland playfield with Dorothy's Spinning House and a Throne Room where different awards are collected.

-Shooter lane plunger will have multiple opening shots available and selectable to the player to collect awards

-The right outlane is a game in itself attempting to rollover all T-O-T-O rollovers to collect award value

-Shoot into the WOZ Throne Room to collect awards and start modes

-Shoot right to left loop shot to get to Flying Monkey lock, top lanes, and around to Haunted Forest Tree Bumpers

-Shoot Top O-Z Lanes to collect award values

-Shoot R-A-I-N-B-O-W targets to collect awards and start modes

-Shoot Emerald City ramp to lock balls, enter Munchkinland, and collect awards

-Shoot multiple loop shots in Munchkinland to spin House with the goal to land the House on the WWE, plus award values

-Shoot lit rollover buttons Lion, Tinman, and Scarecrow to pick up these characters along the Yellow Brick Road to start modes and award values

There is a lot more detail than meets the eye on this drawing but that will come too. Next week we will have a report from our Jersey Jack Pinball Midwest Campus where whitewood games are being assembled.

Jersey Jack - Left Playfield

Today Jersey Jack Pinball, Inc. is proud to unveil the left side of the playfield of the Wizard of Oz Pinball.

This game is really packed from bottom to top with lots of mechanical toys and features which all add up to great game play and fun.

From the bottom up, last week we revealed the State Fair Balloon Bumper. This is a game below the game and spelling targets encourage the player to nudge the ball using that bumper as a flipper and trying to save the ball by returning it back up the lane into play or earn a qualifying game or even to get another ball awarded.

Moving up we now see the Crystal Ball Spinner shot that ties a spinning target to the Crystal Ball that will enable mystery awards and other qualified awards.

Next we see the three haunted Forest Tree Bumpers and some rollovers representing the main characters in the forest which reward point value and awards to the player.

Matt will be sculpting all of these bumpers so they are unique and add another dimension to the game.

Next we find the Wicked Witch of the West on the edge of the Haunted Forest where she will appear and disappear messing with the player. There are skill shots to hit her and make her melt into the playfield.

The upper left playfield is the Witch's Castle. Once up there you will have different opportunities for scoring and mode advancement. The player must also open the doors of the castle to rescue the Dorothy captive ball.

There is also a Winkie Guard drop target preventing you from entering the Witch's Castle so you will have to get by him somehow to get up to that Witch's Castle.

Many elements of the left side of the playfield represent the "Evil darker side" of the story we tell. Next we will show you more of the right side of the playfield.

Things have certainly changed since I started blogging 5 years ago. The Oz world is expanding quickly and I do my best to try and keep up. There are man Oz projects and anniversaries on the horizon. I have four words for Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz. A. DOR. A. BLE!

A couple of fine gentlemen reported on The Wizard of Oz Collectors United Facebook page that Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz is available to rent on iTunes for $3.99.

Bear in mind this is not meant to be an exact remake. It's a movie about Tom & Jerry's exploits in Oz. The run time is just under and hour so scenes are shortened or cut entirely, but it's perfect for this type of cartoon. Had they gone much longer the novelty and charm could have worn off.

Tom & Jerry seem to have an idyllic existence at the Gale Farm and their affection for Dorothy and Toto is endearing. After valiantly attempting to rescue Dorothy after her fall in the pigsty, Aunt Em implores Tom & Jerry to put their differences aside and work together to protect Dorothy and Toto. Naturally, they are caught up in the tornado with their charges and off to Oz they go.

Once in Oz, they find Dorothy and Toto have already begun their journey. They team up with Tuffy the Munchkin mouse and set off to find their beloved mistress. And her little dog too!!

The focus shifts to Tom and Jerry for a short while, but they catch up to Dorothy and her new friends just before they reach Emerald City.

Much of the original Oz score is used and the animation is really beautiful. Oz is incredibly vivid and I especially liked some of the artistic liberties taken with the decor of the Wicked Witch's castle. My only complaint with the animation is that the Kansas sequences weren't sepia. Oz would have been even more dazzling with the contrast.

My only other real complaint is Tom & Jerry's antics during Over the Rainbow which distracted from Nikki Yanofsky's singing. They didn't go over the top, but Judy Garland once said there's something sacred about that song and I share the same sentiment. I think the whole scene should have been played straight.

Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz would be a good introduction for small children. I've met a lot of parents that have misgivings about the Wicked Witch. In this cartoon, the intensity is toned down and the Witch is a comic foil to the lunacy of Tom & Jerry.

I don't want to go into too much detail lest I spoil, but the Oz animation is spectacular. Tom & Jerry integrate well into the plot lines especially with the final confrontation of the Wicked Witch. There's even a nod to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with a fleeting glimpse of Kalidahs. The voice characterizations aren't exact, but they have the familiar timbres without sounding forced. I think Grey DeLisle, as Dorothy's speaking voice, did a very good job emoting Dorothy's sincerity.

All in all, I thought it was very cute and an admirable effort on Warner Brothers' part to bring more children into the Oz fold. This cartoon reinforces my personal desire to see The Wizard of Oz remade as a full length animated feature. With beefed up orchestration and the original cast voices of course.

Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz will be on DVD and Blu-ray August 23rd.

Jersey Jack June 19th Update

Greetings Pinball Fans!

Happy Father's Day to all of the Dad's out there. We hope you all enjoy your day today!

This past week our Design Team continues to construct the whitewood playfield and begin the process of wiring so they can start "shooting" the game.

This is the process which enables them to take what was flat in lines and circles on drawings and translate it all to game play.

In this next two weeks the game will come alive and more design elements such as placing of inserts, tweaking toys and targets and every element of the game gets more defined. This will allow artist Greg Freres to begin his playfield drawings.

With the approval from Warner Brothers, Jerry VanderStelt has begun to hand paint the full color canvas for the backglass art of the game. This is very exciting as we will see this art in a few weeks and it will be released as soon as it is approved by Warner Brothers.

Today Jersey Jack Pinball, Inc. is proud to release the black and white drawing for the right cabinet design artwork. While you are only seeing a black and white image on the cabinet, the final artwork will be shown in full, bright colors. Jerry has created the seven unique works of art for the cabinet and he will draw each by hand on canvas. It is expected that it will take several weeks for him to complete each canvas.

Today, we are also releasing a drawing of the two upper mini playfields. The game is designed to have the "Good" elements on the right and the "Evil" elements on the left.

The first upper playfield on the right side is Munchkinland which will have Dorothy's House. The playfield has one flipper and as you hit the ball on the ramp shot, the ball travels counter clock-wise around the Dorothy's house causing it to spin.

One of the toys in the game is a Flying Monkey that will swoop down and capture a ball (Dorothy) and bring it back to the upper playfield now known as The Witch's Castle. This playfield is on the left rear of the game. This playfield also has one flipper and you must complete a target sequence to release the captive ball (Dorothy) Next week we will tell you how you get up to both of these upper playfields.

There is so much more detail to emerge about this game but every week there will be more and more. Thanks again and enjoy Father's Day.

Jersey Jack Update June 11 2011

Jersey Jack Pinball, Inc. is proud to release the black and white drawing for the left cabinet design artwork. While you are only seeing a black and white image on the cabinet, the final artwork will be shown in full, bright colors. Famed Artist Jerry VanderStelt who has been commissioned to create the seven unique works of art for the cabinet will begin to draw each by hand on canvas. It is expected that it will take several weeks for him to complete each canvas.

Jerry wanted to tell the story beginning with the left side of the cabinet at the flipper button, in bright and cheery, Munchkin land. As your eye moves along the image from the front of the cabinet to the back, you are further into the story and on the Yellow Brick Road moving up the back box, a much darker aspect of the story emerges. The story continued onto the other side of the cabinet backbox and right cabinet side. Next week JJP will be revealing the right side of the cabinet where this story of The Wizard of Oz will come full circle.

JJP has also released a small portion of the lower left playfield. In this we see a bumper that is positioned after the player's ball would drain. The player gets a chance to hit targets, complete modes and work to even get their ball to pop back up onto the main playfield. This is just a small taste of what the Design Team has done in creating this game. The thought of doing things that have never been done as well as some features and aspects of pinball that have not been done in a very long time is what motivated the Design Team to create the Wizard of Oz Pinball Machine.

Next week more playfield detail will be revealed and as we go along you will truly understand how unique and different this game will be as well as staying true to the spirit of Pinball which is a full featured mechanical action fun game experience.

Today, Jersey Jack Pinball, Inc. is happy to release this little teaser image of the Wizard of Oz backglass design. This design is arranged to encapsulate the basic essence of the Wizard of Oz film, capturing the happy and darker threads that this film is weaved with.

Although you are only seeing a rough black and white image, the full-color, final version will carry all the colors of this beautiful film in one glance.

Artist Jerry VanderStelt comments, "The cabinet sides, backbox sides, front coin door panel, backglass art and backbox glass insert are seven different works of art and will complete the story-telling treatment I have in mind for the entire exterior art package, but for now, enjoy this first glimpse into the backglass design of Jersey Jack's very own, "The Wizard of Oz" pinball machine!"

The artwork that is traditionally static as a backglass image will be displayed on a 26" commercial LCD monitor in the backbox. Certain treatments of that artwork will be shown at different times and in different ways on the LCD and this will enhance the attract mode of the game.

Jerry is creating these seven different works by hand painting each on canvas. Each piece could require 3-5 weeks to complete.

Jack said "If you know any of Jerry's works, you better be ready to see an awesome finished art package like none ever produced for a pinball machine before. When this takes life through color and depth, everyone will be blown away".

To ensure the brightness, intensity and detail that Jerry is famous for, all cabinet artwork will be printed using UV ink on the highest grade of adhesive backed vinyl and then applied to the cabinets.

I love to see coloring books! Ones licensed for the movie seem very few and far between. The last ones I can remember are from 1989. The downside is these are very hard to find. For whatever reason, they seem concentrated in the Chicago area. If you can find them, they're only a $1. Dorothy of Oz by IDW Publishing

Wondercon attendees were given a glimpse into the new Dorothy of Oz film with the limited edition debut of a five part comic series by IDW Publishing. The comics serve as a prologue detailing events between the end of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to the beginning of the Dorothy.

The movie is based on the first of many marvelous new adventures created by L. Frank Baum's great-grandson Roger Baum. Dorothy is about a malevolent jester wrecking havoc on the land of Oz and Dorothy & Toto must return to put an end to his misdeeds.

The movie won't be released until next year but you can follow the film's progress on the official Dorothy of Oz site and Facebook page.

Dorothy of Oz is also regularly discussed on the International Wizard of Oz Club Forum.

More information about forthcoming comics (and hopefully other merchandise!) will be posted here as it becomes available.
